Doctors of chiropractic (Chiropractors) are widely recognised as spinal experts and stand as the largest drug-free healthcare professionals in the world. Chiropractic is defined by the World Health Organisation and World Federation of Chiropractic as "a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health”

Chiropractic is a well-recognised form of complementary medicine which focuses on the relationship between the spine/pelvis, brain and the nervous system. It is a science, an art and a philosophy of healthcare with a unique, holistic approach of looking for the cause of disease, and not just the treatment of symptoms.

Chiropractic emphasises on maintaining the health of your spine, nerves, muscles/tendons, ligaments and organs. All of your body’s functions are controlled by your brain, via your spinal cord and nerves. The delicate brain is enclosed and protected by the skull, and similarly the complex and sensitive spinal cord and exiting nerve roots are bordered by the spine. Everyday activities may cause physical stress upon the body’s spinal and extremity joints and the nervous system. Examples can include repetitive work activities (e.g. lifting or sitting in a poor posture at the computer) and trauma (e.g. falls, sports injuries or motor vehicle accidents). Emotional and chemical stressor can also interfere with the nerve pathways.

A poorly functioning spinal column can lead to interruption or impairment to the nervous system, which can result in abnormal function of the body’s tissues and organs. This can lead to pain or discomfort. Chiropractors refer to this as “vertebral subluxation complex”. This means one or more of the bones of the spine become misaligned, causing spinal dysfunction.

Chiropractors use the art of locating these subluxation in the spine, and use the unique skills of assessment, followed by the good knowledge of the science involved in the human body to know where to apply an adjustment. This is a gentle and specific technique used to correct the spinal position and restore normal movement to the joint, thereby returning normal flow to the nervous system. The chiropractic philosophy is based on the fact that through working to remove any interference enables the body to use its amazing self-regulating and healing mechanism to restore normal function and maintain balance within the nervous system, consequently achieving optimum health and wellbeing.
